Hyundai REPAIR

YOUR LOCAL Hyundai REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS

Serving the South Bay Area Including San Jose, Willow Glen, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale & beyond

Hyundai went from budget brand to one of the bestselling names in the country, and San Jose has thousands of them covering daily commutes between Santa Clara, Campbell, and Milpitas. That growth came with a serious stumble: the Theta II engine family has a connecting rod bearing defect that seized engines without warning, and Hyundai settled a class action over it. Our San Jose shop reads Hyundai-specific fault codes, freeze-frame data, and pending failures that aftermarket scanners skip entirely. We measure first, diagnose from the data, and fix it once.

HYUNDAI TUCSON

COMMON PROBLEMS: Theta II Bearing Failure, DCT Shudder, Rear Shock Wear, AC Condenser Leak, AWD Coupling Breakdown

If you own a 2016 through 2021 Tucson with the 2.4L, your engine carries the Theta II bearing defect, and Hyundai’s recall program covers affected VINs. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission on those same years shudders during low-speed crawl because the clutch packs wear from South Bay stop-and-go traffic faster than Hyundai’s maintenance schedule anticipates. Rear shocks wear prematurely and leave the ride feeling loose over freeway expansion joints. AC condensers catch rocks through the grille, and AWD coupling fluid breaks down from heat soak in traffic, adding a vibration you’ll feel through the floorboard.

HYUNDAI SANTA FE

COMMON PROBLEMS: Theta II Bearing Risk, Turbo Oil Starvation, DCT Jerk, ABS Corrosion, Steering Coupler Clunk

Santa Fe models from 2013 through 2019 with the 2.4L share the Tucson’s bearing risk, and the same settlement program applies. The 2.0T turbo version has a different problem: the oil feed line to the turbocharger restricts from heat cycling, and the turbo bearing journal starves at the worst possible moment. Dual-clutch models jerk at walking speed in parking lots. We also see ABS modules that corrode from moisture intrusion and fire the ABS on dry pavement for no reason. Steering coupler clunk shows up during turns and gets louder in cold weather when the grease inside the splined joint stiffens.

HYUNDAI ELANTRA

COMMON PROBLEMS: IVT Judder, GDI Carbon Codes, Rear Bushing Wear, Headliner Sag, Fuel Pump Recall

Hyundai moved the Elantra to an IVT on 2021 and newer models. The transmission judders under light throttle in a way that feels like textured pavement when the road is smooth. Carbon on the 2.0L GDI intake ports triggers knock sensor codes, and the buildup is a direct consequence of how direct injection works: fuel never washes the back of the valves. Rear multi-link bushings wear and push the alignment out, which chews the inner edge of the rear tires. Headliner fabric lets go from adhesive failure in summer heat. Certain VINs also carry a fuel pump control module recall that our San Jose shop can check with your VIN on the spot.

HYUNDAI SONATA

COMMON PROBLEMS: Theta II Seizure, Intake Valve Carbon, Trunk Latch Failure, Catalytic Converter Codes, Steering Rack Leak

The 2011 through 2019 Sonata carried the Theta II 2.4L, and it shares the same seizure risk. On the turbocharged 2.0T, GDI carbon deposits choke the intake valves and produce a rough idle that cleans up at higher RPM when air velocity pushes past the restriction. Trunk latch failure from plastic fatigue inside the actuator keeps the lid from latching flush, and you’ll notice the warning light before you notice the gap. Oxygen sensor degradation upstream of the catalytic converter trips converter efficiency codes, and swapping the sensor clears the light without replacing the converter. Steering rack seals weep fluid onto the garage floor under the front subframe.

HYUNDAI PALISADE

COMMON PROBLEMS: Oil Dilution (Owner-Reported), Crossmember Vibration, Sunroof Rattle, Harness Chafe, Heater Core Leak

The Palisade is Hyundai’s three-row flagship, and owner forums report oil dilution on the 3.8L V6 when short trips don’t let the engine cook fuel vapors out of the crankcase oil. Transmission crossmember vibration transfers through the floor at highway cruising speed. Panoramic sunroof rattle traces to frame flex during cornering. Wiring harness chafe behind the dashboard produces electrical ghosts that come and go with no visible pattern, and you need hands on the harness to find the rub point. A sweet coolant smell through the vents means the heater core is leaking at a solder joint, and catching it before coolant reaches the carpet saves a much bigger cleanup job.
