ABOUT
Learn about the DRIVEN brand.
2001–2006 MDX (YD1)
The original YD1 MDX built its reputation on a durable 3.5L V6 and standard all-wheel drive, and the drivetrain still holds up well today. The bigger concern on 2003–2006 models is the Takata airbag inflator recall, which affected a wide range of vehicles across the industry. We check the recall status on every YD1 MDX that visits our shop and can complete the airbag inflator replacement if your vehicle qualifies. Suspension bushings and timing components also show typical wear at higher mileage, and we inspect both during routine service.
2007–2009 MDX (YD2)
COMMON PROBLEMS: Excessive oil consumption in the new 3.7L V6 engine, a known issue significant enough to prompt a class-action settlement.
The second-generation MDX introduced a larger 3.7L V6 and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, but the new engine quickly developed a reputation for burning oil faster than expected. The issue became widespread enough for Acura to face a class-action lawsuit from affected owners. We recommend more frequent oil-level checks on any 2007–2009 MDX, especially if you notice a burning smell or need to top off oil between scheduled services. Catching low oil levels early helps protect the engine from more serious long-term damage.
2010–2013 MDX (YD2, FACELIFT)
COMMON PROBLEMS: Continued oil consumption complaints on the 3.7L V6, alongside the Power Plenum grille refresh and generally solid structural reliability.
Acura refreshed the MDX's styling for the 2010 model year with the signature Power Plenum grille, but the 3.7L V6 retained its tendency to consume oil from earlier YD2 years. We monitor oil levels closely on this generation and can walk you through what a normal consumption rate looks like versus one that signals a bigger problem. Outside of the engine, this generation holds up structurally, with most other components lasting well past 100,000 miles under regular maintenance.
2014–2020 MDX (YD3)
COMMON PROBLEMS: Irregular gear changes and hesitation on acceleration tied to the new 9-speed automatic transmission, along with hybrid-specific dual-clutch concerns on Sport Hybrid trims.
The third-generation MDX introduced a 9-speed automatic transmission, and it took a few years for the system to mature fully. Owners report irregular gear changes and momentary hesitation when accelerating from a stop, both patterns we test for during a transmission diagnostic. Sport Hybrid trims added a dual-clutch transmission paired with a hybrid powertrain, which requires specialized diagnostic knowledge we keep up to date. If your YD3 MDX shudders, hesitates, or delays engagement when shifting into gear, we can trace the issue to its source instead of recommending a full transmission replacement right away.
2022–PRESENT MDX (FOURTH GENERATION)
COMMON PROBLEMS: A newer platform with fewer widespread mechanical issues so far, though early electronics and infotainment quirks have been reported on the turbocharged Type S trim.
Acura moved the MDX to a new platform for 2022 and introduced a turbocharged Type S trim with significantly more power than previous generations. Because this generation is still relatively young, major mechanical patterns have not yet emerged, though some owners report minor infotainment glitches and electronics quirks. We keep our diagnostic tools up to date with the latest MDX software, so any issue you bring in gets an accurate read, not a guess.
