Model S Pre-Refresh (2012–2016)

COMMON PROBLEMS: Drive Unit Bearing Noise, Door Handle Presentation Failure, 12V Battery Lockout, Air Suspension Compressor Failure

Front drive unit bearing noise starts as a faint hum at highway speed and progresses to a vibration through the floor and steering wheel over thousands of miles, and the repair requires removing and replacing the drive unit assembly. The 12V battery locks the entire car out when it dies, and the air suspension compressor burns out compensating for slow spring leaks. We test-drive the unit to assess bearing wear with a proper road test before recommending replacement.

Model S Facelift (2016–2021)

COMMON PROBLEMS: MCU1 eMMC Recall, Battery Coolant Pump Weep, Drive Unit Whine Progression, Suspension Bushing Wear

MCU1 eMMC flash memory failure on pre-March 2018 production killed the touchscreen, navigation, climate interface, and backup camera display, and Tesla's federal recall covered the replacement on affected units. Drive-unit whine on this generation follows the same bearing-wear pattern as earlier cars, and suspension bushings wear, introducing a vague, wandering feel at highway speed. Model S Plaid (2021–Present)

COMMON PROBLEMS: Tri-Motor Inverter Faults, Yoke Steering Calibration, Carbon Wing Mount Cracking, Track Mode Brake Wear

The tri-motor Plaid powertrain throws intermittent inverter faults on a subset of these cars, usually clearing after a system reset but worth documenting for a recurring pattern. The carbon fiber rear wing mount cracks at its attachment points on cars that see repeated high-speed driving, and brake pads wear faster under Track Mode's braking cycling. We recalibrate the steering system after any service that touches it.

Model S Long Range (2021–Present)

COMMON PROBLEMS: BMS Calibration Drift, 12V Converter Faults, Charge Port Door Motor Failure, Heat Pump Octovalve Faults

The redesigned Long Range battery management system occasionally drifts in its calibration, showing an inaccurate range estimate that a periodic full charge corrects. The octovalve routing coolant between the battery, cabin, and drive units is stuck on a subset of these cars, reducing cabin heating. We isolate converter faults with proper diagnostic access.

Model S Air Suspension & Door Handles

COMMON PROBLEMS: Compressor Thermal Shutdown, Handle Motor Failure, Ride Height Sensor Faults, Corner Strut Replacement

The air suspension compressor shuts down due to thermal overload when it runs continuously to compensate for a slow leak at one corner. Diagnosing which corner leaks requires a soap test and patience. Ride height sensors drift out of calibration, resulting in an inaccurate level reported to the system. Door handle presentation motors fail independently on each door rather than as a matched set. We isolate the leaking suspension corner and confirm handle motor function before quoting either repair.
