The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 sells in huge numbers, and its V8 engines and automatic transmissions have drawn recalls, lawsuits, and service bulletins. Fremont owners ask us about ticking engines, rough shifts, and weak air conditioning. We know where these trucks fail. Our technicians test before they quote, so your money goes to the real fault.
— Let’s get started —
Lifter Failure on 5.3L and 6.2L V8s
GM V8 engines use Active Fuel Management or Dynamic Fuel Management to shut cylinders off. Special lifters switch the cylinders. They can stick or collapse, wearing the camshaft. A federal class action names the Silverado 1500, and a judge kept the AFM and DFM claims together in March 2026.
Listen for ticking. Watch for misfire codes and rough idle. Early repair can mean a lifter set, while late repair can mean a camshaft and an engine teardown. We scan, test, and inspect before we quote. Bring your Silverado in at the first tick.
L87 6.2L Rod Bearing Recall
GM recalled 107,244 Silverado 1500 trucks from 2021 to 2024 with the 6.2L L87 engine. Sediment on connecting rods and out-of-spec crankshaft surfaces damage the rod bearings. GM counted 28,102 field complaints tied to L87 bearing, rod, or crankshaft failure. Dealers check for code P0016 and replace engines showing it.
NHTSA opened a deeper review after owners reported failures following the fix. We check your VIN against the recall, scan for codes, and look for metal in the oil. Call us if your 6.2L loses power or knocks.
Eight-Speed Transmission Shudder
The 8L90 eight-speed in 2015 to 2019 Silverados can shudder, jerk, and hesitate. A class action blames excess friction in the torque converter, and a federal appeals court let the case move forward in 2024. The suit cites 13 GM service bulletins in support of the shift complaint.
You feel a shake at highway speed or a hard shift at a stop. Metal shavings in the fluid signal wear. We road-test the truck, inspect the fluid, and properly service the transmission. Schedule a visit before small shudders turn into a need for a replacement.
Firm Downshifts From the 10-Speed
GM's 10-speed automatic runs in the 2019 and later Silverado. A GM bulletin describes a firm downshift after extended highway driving, and separate 2019 bulletins placed the 10L80 on a parts restriction.
Expect a bang as the transmission drops gears at speed. Fluid condition and software both matter. We scan for updates, check the fluid, and drive the truck on the highway before we call it fixed. Book a diagnostic if your Silverado shifts hard.
Air Conditioning Failure
CarComplaints lists failed air conditioning as the most reported problem on the 2014 Silverado 1500. The compressor, condenser, and lines form a pressurized loop. A leak or a failed part lets refrigerant escape, and cooling fades. Bay Area heat quickly exposes a weak system.
Weak cooling, a clicking compressor, or warm air at idle point to a leak or failed part. We leak-test, check pressures, and repair any faults before we recharge. Call us before the next hot day.
