Oil leaks are almost a rite of passage for this generation of X5. A spot on the garage floor, a burning smell after you park, blue smoke when you idle at a light. These are the signs owners learn to recognize.
The leak is rarely random. The X5 has a handful of gaskets and seals that fail in a predictable order. Here is where to look.
The Valve Cover Gasket
This is the most common leak on the X5. The valve cover gasket sits up high on the engine, and it hardens and cracks with heat and miles.
When it goes, oil seeps down the side of the engine and onto the hot exhaust below. That is where the burning smell comes from, and the wisp of smoke you see at a stoplight. The leak itself drips slowly, but the smell tells on it long before you find a puddle.
The Oil Filter Housing Gasket
This one is a frequent X5 leak, and it can move a lot of oil. The filter housing gasket sits where the housing meets the engine block, and when it fails, oil runs down the front and side.
Sometimes this leak gets mistaken for others because the oil spreads as it runs down. It can also leak into the area where coolant lives, which mixes the two and turns into a bigger job. Worth pinning down early.
The Oil Pan Gasket
Lower down, the oil pan gasket seals the pan to the bottom of the engine. As it ages, it weeps, and you get drips that land dead center under the car. A puddle right in the middle of your parking spot, rather than off to one side, often points here. On the X5, this one takes more labor to reach, so a clear diagnosis matters before the work starts.
Seals and Other Spots
The crankshaft seals at the front and rear of the engine can leak as they age. The rear main seal, in particular, is a labor-heavy fix because of where it sits. The oil pan can also leak around the oil level sensor seal. These are less common but worth checking when the obvious gaskets test dry.
