The Car Pulls to One Side
The clearest sign is a pull. You let the wheel go light on a straight, flat road, and the car drifts to the left or the right on its own. A small pull might just be the road’s crown. A pull that showed up right after a pothole, on a road where the car used to track straight, is a different story. The impact shifted the angle, and the car is following it.
The Steering Wheel Sits Crooked
Here is one driver’s notice fast. You are going straight, but the wheel is cocked off to one side to hold the line. Before the pothole, it sat level. After, you are holding it at an angle just to go straight. That off-center wheel is a clear alignment flag, and it usually means the toe got knocked out.
Your Tires Start Wearing Wrong
Bad alignment chews tires, and it does it unevenly. When the wheels are not pointed right, the tire scrubs as it rolls instead of rolling clean. Check the tread across the tire. One edge worn down while the other still looks good is the classic sign. Left alone, alignment wear can ruin a good tire in a few thousand miles, which makes the alignment cost look small next to it.
It Might Be More Than Alignment
A pothole hard enough to knock the alignment out can bend other things too. This is the part people miss. A hard hit can bend a wheel, which shows up as a vibration that was not there before. It can damage a tire’s sidewall, leaving a bulge that is a blowout waiting to happen. It can bend a suspension part or knock a tire’s balance off. So after a real impact, an alignment check is also a chance to catch damage that goes past the alignment itself.
