FORESTER 2.5L (EJ253 SOHC, THEN FB25)
COMMON PROBLEMS: external head-gasket weep on the older EJ253, coolant seepage at the head, low-speed CVT shudder, front wheel-bearing growl
We lead with the Forester because it spans two engine eras and shows both habits at once. The older SOHC Foresters running the EJ253 tend to weep at the head gasket, and the sign is a slow coolant seep down the side of the block. We put the cooling system under pressure and chemically test the coolant for exhaust gas, which separates a surface weep from a gasket passing combustion gas into the jacket. On the later Forester with the Lineartronic CVT, a low-speed shudder points at the transfer clutch and its fluid, so we road-test the car while logging CVT data on the scan tool. We start with a full fluid exchange and a clutch relearn, and we escalate only when the data still shows slip.

OUTBACK & LEGACY 2.5L (FB25)
COMMON PROBLEMS: oil consumption, low-speed CVT shudder, valve-cover oil seepage, front wheel-bearing growl, parasitic battery drain
The FB25 can burn oil through worn oil-control rings, and you spot it as a dipstick that drops with no leak underneath and no blue haze behind. We don’t lean on a hunch here, so we run the formal sealed oil-consumption test with a measured fill and a second reading after a set drive. That number tells us whether the engine sits inside the affected range or whether something else is leaking. For a confirmed consumption case within the affected range, the revised Subaru procedure calls for a short-block replacement, and we carry it out with fresh gaskets and seals. We measure first, then we fix it once.

IMPREZA & CROSSTREK 2.0L (FB20)
COMMON PROBLEMS: oil consumption, low-speed CVT shudder, wheel-bearing growl, valve-cover oil seepage, intermittent battery drain
A Crosstrek is mechanically a raised Impreza, so the two share the same FB20 engine and the same Lineartronic transmission. That shared hardware hands them the same short list of failure points. When either car starts using oil, we run the sealed consumption test before anyone reaches for parts. If it shudders at a stop or under light throttle, we log the CVT data on a road test and compare the fluid to spec. The diagnosis stays the same across both badges, because the mechanism underneath is identical.

WRX & STI TURBO (FA20DIT / EJ257)
COMMON PROBLEMS: cracked ringlands, rod-bearing knock, detonation under boost, heavy blow-by, oil consumption
A WRX or STI that detonates under boost, or that sees low-speed pre-ignition, can crack a ringland and hammer the rod bearings. We pull compression and leak-down numbers, and we listen for air pushing into the crankcase through a damaged ringland. A borescope lets us see the piston crowns and cylinder walls before we split a single case half. We send oil out for analysis to read the bearing metals, and we verify the tune state, because a lean calibration on low octane is what drives this failure. Those readings tell us how far the damage runs before we open anything.

ASCENT 2.4L TURBO (FA24)
COMMON PROBLEMS: transfer-clutch judder, low-speed shudder, oil dilution from fuel, turbo-seal seepage, open recall items
The Ascent runs the FA24 direct-injected turbo, and its CVT can judder through the multi-plate transfer clutch when the fluid and software fall out of step. We work the Subaru service flow in order, beginning with a fluid exchange and a control-module reprogram, and we close any open recall items first so nothing masks the road-test result. A direct-injection turbo can dilute the oil with fuel, which can look like a fault on the dipstick, so we send a sample out for analysis. The lab report draws the line between normal dilution and a fault worth chasing.

WHEEL BEARINGS ACROSS THE LINEUP (SEALED HUB UNITS)
COMMON PROBLEMS: failed sealed hub bearing, speed-dependent growl, pitch shift in gentle turns, growl mistaken for tire noise
Subaru sealed hub bearings share one failure pattern, where the seal lets go and the bearing begins to growl. The growl climbs with road speed, and it shifts pitch when you sway the car gently left and right. These hubs get loud while they still show no play at the wheel, so a hand check at the top and bottom of the tire can read as healthy. We clip a chassis-ear onto the suspect corners and drive the car, then read the loudest channel to pin the failing hub.
