MAZDA CX-5
COMMON PROBLEMS: coolant weeping at the pump seal, crystallized crust near the shaft, low-coolant warnings, pump shaft play, faint sweet smell when warm
We start with the SkyActiv pump because it tells on itself early through a weep hole placed between the seals on purpose. A dry steam stain alone means we keep looking, while wet coolant and a crusty deposit around that hole condemn the pump. We run a cold pressure test and watch whether the gauge holds across several minutes, then check the shaft for play by hand to catch a bearing that has started to walk. Catching it at the weep stage keeps a small coolant job from turning into an overheat that warps something expensive. The early read here is what saves the head.
MAZDA CX-9
COMMON PROBLEMS: milky oil with a rising oil level, coolant disappearing with no visible drip, overheating under highway load, water-pump seal failure, timing-chain teardown labor
On the first-generation CX-9 the water pump lives inside the engine valley behind the timing cover, and the chain turns it from back there with no accessory belt in the loop. When that seal lets go, coolant doesn’t fall to the ground; it pushes into the crankcase, so the oil turns milky and the dipstick reads higher than it should. We confirm the path on a clean, dry engine bay with a cooling-system pressure test held over time, and we weigh the coolant loss against the oil-level change before we name a cause. The labor that hurts on this job is the timing-chain teardown, so we earn it with proof before any head-gasket call gets made.
MAZDA CX-30
COMMON PROBLEMS: rough cold idle, hesitation under light throttle, wandering misfire codes, intake-valve carbon buildup, reduced throttle response
Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder, so the intake valves miss the gasoline wash that a port-injected engine gives them. Oil mist drawn through the PCV system drifts across those valves and bakes into hard carbon over the miles, and that buildup chokes airflow into the chamber. We drop a borescope into the intake ports and look at the deposits before we recommend a thing, because a pour-in bottle can’t reach a deposit you can see. When the ports are loaded, we walnut-blast the valves with media and clean the metal directly, then verify the idle and the fuel trims on the scan tool.

The Miata is a car you steer with your fingertips, so when something feels off, that feel is the first instrument we trust. A spongy pedal or a bite point that has dropped toward the floor points us at the hydraulic circuit ahead of a worn disc. We bleed the clutch hydraulics properly and inspect both cylinders for weeping seals and internal bypass, watching how the pedal firms up as the air leaves the line. COMMON PROBLEMS: hot hard-start, stall after a heat soak, long crank times, low-side fuel pressure that fades under load, power loss climbing a grade
A turbocharged Mazda that cranks long and stalls when it’s hot is telling us about fuel delivery ahead of spark. The low-pressure pump feeds the high-pressure side, and when its output sags the engine starves right when it needs the most fuel, so the car can run fine cold and fall on its face hot. We put the scan tool on low-side fuel pressure and load the engine until the numbers tell the truth, then watch whether that pressure holds or collapses as the system works. A reading that stays strong cold and drops under load is the pattern we’re after, so we let the data name the part.
