ACURA MDX REPAIR
YOUR LOCAL ACURA MDX REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS
Serving the East Bay Area Including San Ramon, Dublin, Danville, Blackhawk & beyond.
Your MDX drives the way it always has, and a service reminder appears with no noise behind it. Most of the advice you hear about a car at 100,000 miles was written about engines that never went into an MDX. At Driven Auto Care of San Ramon we build the service list around one date. Every V6 MDX built through 2020 turns a rubber timing belt, and rubber hardens with age whether the car is driven or parked. Our San Ramon shop keeps MDX belt dates and service records on file.
— Let’s get started —
TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP SERVICE
COMMON CONCERNS: A Service Reminder On The Dash, Approaching 100,000 Miles, A Belt With No Date On Record.
This service lands around 100,000 miles, or about seven years, whichever comes first. Age counts as much as mileage here. A belt near its date runs quietly, and you can see its condition once the upper cover is off. When a belt breaks, the valves and pistons meet.
We read your service records, then check the belt and tensioner for cracking, glazing and oil. The same belt turns the water pump, so one teardown reaches the pump and lets us read the cam and crank seals for seepage. If you're buying a used MDX, a pre-purchase inspection puts that belt and its records in front of you.
FRONT SUSPENSION, BUSHINGS, LINKS AND STRUTS
COMMON CONCERNS: A Knock Over Driveway Lips, A Ride That Has Gone Noisy, One Tire Edge Wearing Faster.
An MDX carries three rows of weight on rubber joints bonded to metal. That rubber hardens and cracks with age on the 2007 to 2020 cars, and parts that were held still start to move. That's when a bump you used to barely feel arrives as a knock.
The sway bar links and the strut mounts are the smallest parts under that load, so we look there first. On the lift we load each joint with a pry bar, then shake the links and read the struts. We road test the car over a rough stretch to narrow it to one corner. The tire wear on that corner matches what the lift showed.
OIL USE, FOULED PLUGS AND ENGINE MOUNTS
COMMON CONCERNS: Topping Up The Oil Between Changes, A Shake At A Stoplight In Gear, A Check-Engine Light With A Rough Idle.
Oil can leave through the cylinders with nothing showing on your driveway. On the 2010 to 2012 3.7-liter V6, it's commonly the rings and cylinder walls. The 2014 to 2020 3.5-liter V6 is built to shut cylinders off at light load, and those can draw oil past their rings.
Burned oil leaves deposits on the plugs, and plug condition is a record of what that cylinder has been doing. On those 2014 to 2020 cars the switching also works the rubber engine mounts, which can tear. A torn mount and a fouled plug make the same shake at a stoplight. We measure oil use over a set interval, read the plugs, and watch the engine lift in gear.
ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SERVICE
COMMON CONCERNS: A Groan In Slow Tight Turns, A Shudder Pulling Into A Parking Space, A Chatter From The Rear.
A groan or shudder in slow tight turns most often comes from the rear axle. The rear axle takes a fluid service of its own. On 2007 to 2020 cars, the all-wheel-drive system Acura calls SH-AWD sends power side to side through clutch packs in fluid. That fluid takes a load every time you turn, and as it wears the clutches stop slipping smoothly.
The grab and release comes through the floor as a groan. We reproduce it on a slow full-lock circle in both directions, then draw the fluid and read its color and smell. When worn fluid is the cause, the correct fluid service can clear the groan; if the noise remains, we continue testing the clutch pack and the surrounding driveline.
BRAKES
COMMON CONCERNS: A Vibration You Feel Through The Pedal, Grinding When You Slow Down, More Room Needed To Stop.
The 2001 to 2020 MDX is a heavy three-row car, and every stop turns that weight into heat at the pads and rotors. Heat and mileage take the friction material down. A rotor that has taken too many heat cycles stops running true, and you feel that through the pedal as a pulse.
A pulsing pedal and worn pads are two separate measurements, and your MDX can pass one while failing the other. We read pad thickness, rotor thickness and rotor runout against Acura's specification. We check the guide pins and parking brake on the same lift. Your brake quote comes off those numbers.
