Toyota Tundra Repair
YOUR LOCAL TOYOTA TUNDRA REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS
Serving Castro Valley, Hayward, San Lorenzo, Dublin & beyond
The Tundra's whole reputation is built on taking abuse and shrugging it off, which is why owners run them hard and keep towing long past the point most trucks tap out. But work and miles leave a mark, and the truck starts speaking up. A rough idle on a cold morning. A whine drifting up from the rear. A shudder dragging a load up a grade. The Tundra tends to tip its hand before anything major. At Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA, we test first and only fix what the truck needs.
— Let’s get started —
Engine
COMMON PROBLEMS: Oil Leaks, Rough Idle, Misfires, Cold Start Issues, Exhaust Manifold Leaks
The V8 is a stout motor, but it's got its weak spots. Oil works its way out of the usual gaskets with age, and you'll catch the smell when it reaches something hot. As the plugs and coils wear, a rough idle or a misfire creeps in, and it's roughest on a cold morning when the engine's straining to light off. A few model years are known for an exhaust manifold leak, which shows up as a tick that's loudest cold and quiets as the truck warms. We run down the leaks and pull codes before anything else.
Cooling System
COMMON PROBLEMS: Water Pump Leaks, Coolant Loss, Overheating, Thermostat Failure, Radiator Leaks
Towing and hauling lean hard on the cooling system, and the water pump takes the brunt of it over time. The leak usually opens quietly, a drip or a sweet smell after the truck cools. A thermostat can hang up, leaving the engine running cold or letting it run hot, and the radiator can start leaking with age. Overheating a Tundra with a load behind it is a genuine risk, so a slow leak isn't one to ride out. We pressure test the system and trace where the coolant's going.
Transmission
COMMON PROBLEMS: Harsh Shifting, Shudder, Slipping, Delayed Engagement, Fluid Breakdown
Pull weight and the transmission runs hot. Heat is what kills the fluid. Once it's cooked you feel it, a hard shift, a shudder, a beat of nothing before the gear grabs. Almost always it's the fluid, worn out and overdue, because a truck that actually works goes through fluid a lot faster than one that just runs to the store. People stretch that service way too long. We check the fluid, drive it to feel where it's acting up, and read the codes before we send you anywhere.
Suspension
COMMON PROBLEMS: Clunking Noise, Worn Ball Joints, Uneven Tire Wear, Steering Vibration, Worn Shocks
The underside of a work truck takes a beating, and one that hauls takes more. Ball joints and bushings wear out and clunk over bumps. Worn shocks let the back end bounce, and it rides rough, worse with a load in the bed. Then the alignment drifts as the parts go, so the tires wear unevenly and the wheel shakes at speed. We put it on the lift, grab each joint and check for play, and read the tires to find what's actually worn out down there.
Brakes
COMMON PROBLEMS: Squealing, Vibration When Braking, Premature Wear, Grinding, Soft Pedal
A Tundra is heavy to begin with, and hanging a trailer off it makes the brakes work even harder, so they don't last as long as folks expect. A squeal means the pads are getting thin. A shake in the pedal when you slow is usually warped rotors, and it gets worse the longer you leave it. Grinding is metal on metal, pads gone, past due. A soft pedal is its own thing, and on a truck you tow with, that gets checked right now, not later.
"Been going here for years and it’s always a great experience. They are friendly, honest, trustworthy, and patient. I appreciate that they start small before doing anything major and costly, and they back up their work. I have been lied to by dealerships before, and John will show me the parts and explain what is needed and why. Highly recommend!"
Customer
"Would highly recommend this service shop. They were quick to take my car in, performed a very thorough and comprehensive service, and priced the work extremely competitively. If you need a good mechanic, and are looking to be treated fairly, you should go to John & Jennifer."
Customer
"Such an honest shop. It has saved me thousands of dollars by providing honest assessments of my car and advising against recommendations made by dishonest shops, 2 in Castro Valley and one in Hayward. Furthermore, today the mechanic told me I do not need a new battery and instead recharged mine for 15 minutes at no charge even though I offered to pay for his time."
