COMMON PROBLEMS: Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leaks, Valve Cover Gasket Leaks, Timing Chain Guide Wear, Carbon Buildup, Cold Start Rattle

The turbo engines in the 4 Series like to leak oil, and they do it in the same spots over and over. The oil filter housing gasket weeps down the front of the block, sometimes onto the belt. The valve cover gasket seeps down the side. On the older N20 four, the plastic timing chain guides wear, and a stretched chain rattles on a cold start, which is the sound you get looked at before it skips. Carbon builds on the intake valves over the miles and dulls the throttle.

Cooling System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Electric Water Pump Failure, Plastic Coolant Fitting Leaks, Coolant Loss, Overheating, Coolant Smell

BMW went with an electric water pump on these, and it fails in a way that catches people off guard. No leak, no noise, it just quits and the temperature climbs fast. The plastic cooling fittings and hoses crack with age and start weeping coolant, and you often catch the sweet smell before you see a drop. Sometimes the only clue is the gauge drifting up on a warm day. These inline engines don't take overheating well, so a small coolant problem is not one to ride out.

Fuel System

COMMON PROBLEMS: High-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure, Fuel Injector Issues, Hard Starting, Misfires, Rough Idle

The direct-injection setup helps the 4 Series with power and mileage, but the high-pressure pump and the injectors carry the load for it. When one starts to give up, you feel it right away. A long crank before it fires. A rough idle sitting at a light. A misfire that trips the check engine light and leaves the car stumbling. It feels like a coil or a plug, which is exactly why guessing at it gets expensive fast.

Electrical System

A 4 Series is loaded with electronics, and every module is one more spot for something to act up. A battery flat overnight from a drain you can't see. The iDrive screen freezing or rebooting on its own. A sensor throwing a fault and dropping the car into limp mode for no reason you can spot. Sometimes it's simple, a worn battery or a bad ground. Sometimes it's a module that needs a real diagnosis instead of a parts swap.

Suspension

COMMON PROBLEMS: Control Arm Bushing Wear, Clunking Noise, Uneven Tire Wear, Steering Vibration, Rough Ride

The 4 Series feels sharp and planted when the front end is tight. Then the control arm bushings wear, and the car starts talking to you. A clunk over a pothole. A knock as you turn into the driveway. Worn parts pull the alignment off too, so the tires scrub unevenly and the wheel picks up a shimmy at speed. Give it enough time and a car built to feel connected starts feeling loose and busy over rough pavement.
