TOYOTA CAMRY REPAIR
YOUR LOCAL TOYOTA CAMRY REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS
Serving Castro Valley, Hayward, San Lorenzo, Dublin & beyond
The Camry is the car people buy when they just want it to run, and mostly it does. Two hundred thousand miles is not a stretch on one of these. But even a Camry wears parts, and a few problems show up often enough that we know them on sight. A shake at idle. A little oil burning off. The AC not as cold as it was. The Camry tends to warn you first. At Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA, we read those signs and test before we start replacing parts.
— Let’s get started —
Engine
COMMON PROBLEMS: Oil Consumption, Rough Idle, Carbon Buildup, Oil Leaks, Misfires
Some Camry engines burn oil, and certain years were bad enough that Toyota heard about it. You top it off and the level still drops between changes, so checking it is worth the habit. A rough idle at a light usually points at the ignition side or a vacuum leak. The direct-injection engines build carbon on the intake valves over the miles, which shows up as a stumble. Oil seeps from the valve cover and cam gaskets as they harden. A worn coil or plug brings on a misfire.
Cooling System
COMMON PROBLEMS: Water Pump Leaks, Coolant Loss, Thermostat Failure, Overheating, Radiator Leaks
The Camry cooling system is dependable, but nothing lasts forever under heat. The water pump seeps at the gasket as it ages. Hoses crack, and the radiator can split at a plastic tank, and either one starts a slow leak. A stuck thermostat pushes the temperature the wrong way, sometimes too hot, sometimes never warming up right. Catch a small coolant leak early, because letting one run turns into an overheat, and that is a much bigger bill than a hose or a pump.
Fuel System
COMMON PROBLEMS: Fuel Injector Issues, Hard Starting, Rough Idle, Hesitation, Check Engine Light
Fuel trouble on a Camry is rare, but the injectors and pump still age. And when one starts to go, you feel it. Long crank in the morning before it fires. A shake at the light. That flat spot when you step on it, and nothing happens for a beat. A dirty injector or a weak pump can trip the check engine light too. Thing is, it feels a lot like a bad coil. So we test it instead of throwing parts at it and hoping.
Electrical System
COMMON PROBLEMS: Battery Drain, Alternator Wear, Warning Lights, Sensor Faults, Starting Problems
Newer Camrys pack in way more electronics, so there are more spots for a gremlin to hide. Battery dead in the driveway from some drain you can't see. Or it keeps dying because the alternator quit charging it. Lights that blink on, then off. A sensor that faults and leaves the car running weird. Could be nothing, a tired battery, a loose ground. Could be something that takes real digging to find. Hard to know until you look.
Suspension
COMMON PROBLEMS: Strut Wear, Control Arm Bushing Wear, Clunking Noise, Uneven Tire Wear, Rough Ride
A Camry rides soft and quiet when everything's fresh. So you notice when it stops. Struts go slow, and the giveaway is a front end that bounces or floats over dips instead of settling down. Bushings and sway bar links wear too. They knock over bumps, or when turning into the driveway. Worn parts drag the alignment off, so the tires wear funny and the ride turns rough. None of it heals on its own. And it chews tires while you wait.
"Been going here for years and it’s always a great experience. They are friendly, honest, trustworthy, and patient. I appreciate that they start small before doing anything major and costly, and they back up their work. I have been lied to by dealerships before, and John will show me the parts and explain what is needed and why. Highly recommend!"
Customer
"Would highly recommend this service shop. They were quick to take my car in, performed a very thorough and comprehensive service, and priced the work extremely competitively. If you need a good mechanic, and are looking to be treated fairly, you should go to John & Jennifer."
Customer
"Such an honest shop. It has saved me thousands of dollars by providing honest assessments of my car and advising against recommendations made by dishonest shops, 2 in Castro Valley and one in Hayward. Furthermore, today the mechanic told me I do not need a new battery and instead recharged mine for 15 minutes at no charge even though I offered to pay for his time."
