Engine

COMMON PROBLEMS: Oil Leaks, Valve Cover Gasket Leaks, Rough Idle, Oil Filter Housing Leaks, Misfires

Two gaskets cause most of the oil leaks on these cars. The valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket both harden up over time and start to weep. You smell it before you see it, usually. Oil hits something hot and you get that faint burnt smell after you park. Sometimes a little smoke. The turbo engines run hot and heat is what kills these gaskets in the first place. Plugs and coils wear too, and that's where a rough idle or a misfire comes from.

Cooling System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Water Pump Failure, Coolant Leaks, Overheating, Thermostat Failure, Expansion Tank Cracks

The water pump is electric on these, and it fails. Owners already know the word by the time they call. The bad part is it can quit with almost no warning and the temperature climbs fast. Then there's the plastic. The expansion tank and the thermostat housing go brittle and crack, and coolant seeps out of the seams. A sweet smell in the driveway or a low coolant light is the kind of thing you want looked at early. Overheating one of these is not a cheap mistake.

Fuel System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Fuel Pump Issues, Hard Starting, Misfires, Rough Idle, Check Engine Light

The high-pressure fuel pump is the weak link on the turbo engines. When it starts going you get a hard start, a stumble, maybe a check engine light riding along with a misfire. Feels like ignition trouble. That's the trap. People chase coils and plugs when the pump is the real issue. A weak one sometimes acts up worst when the tank is low or the engine is already hot.

Electrical System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Window Regulator Failure, Battery Drain, Warning Lights, Sensor Faults, Door Lock Issues

A 3 Series has electronics everywhere, so there's a lot that can act up. Window regulators are the classic one. The window drops and won't come back, or it stops halfway and sits there. Batteries drain overnight. Warning lights blink on and disappear. Door locks quit doing what they should. Some of it is a tired battery or a loose connection. Some of it goes back to a sensor or a module that needs a real look.

Suspension

COMMON PROBLEMS: Control Arm Bushing Wear, Clunking Noise, Uneven Tire Wear, Steering Vibration, Rough Ride

Front control arm bushings are the first thing to go on these. You'll hear a clunk going over a driveway lip or a speed bump. The steering starts feeling a little vague off center. Once those bushings wear, the alignment drifts, and then the tires start scrubbing off unevenly and you feel a shimmy in the wheel at freeway speed. A car that felt sharp new starts feeling tired. That's the bushings talking.
