COMMON PROBLEMS: EcoBoost Carbon Buildup, Timing Chain and Phaser Wear, Cam Phaser Rattle, Oil Leaks, Spark Plug and Coil Wear

The EcoBoost V6 pulls hard, but direct injection means carbon cakes onto the intake valves over the miles and dulls the throttle. The bigger complaint on these is the cam phasers and timing chain, and a rattle on start-up or at idle is the sound owners hear and worry about. It gets worse if you ignore it. The 5.0 V8 has its own quirks, and both engines seep oil from the usual gaskets as they age. Plugs and coils wear and bring on misfires.

Cooling System

The cooling system earns its keep on a truck that tows, and summer heat finds the weak spots. Hoses crack, the water pump seeps, and a bad thermostat can send the temperature the wrong way. Some EcoBoost engines have a known coolant intrusion problem, where coolant slips into a cylinder and burns off with no puddle to find. The clue there is a level that keeps dropping and a truck that runs hot. Overheating while towing or climbing a grade means the system is straining under load.

Fuel System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Fuel Pump Failure, Injector Issues, Hard Starting, Rough Idle, Loss of Power

A truck this size needs steady fuel, and when the pump or an injector starts to fade, you feel it. A long crank before it catches. A stumble pulling away from a stop. A rough idle sitting at a light. On the EcoBoost, a fuel problem can feel a lot like a boost or ignition issue, and on the V8 it shows up as a miss or lost power. Guessing between them is how the bill climbs, so it pays to test first.

Electrical System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Battery Drain, Charging System Faults, Sensor Failures, Warning Lights, Starting Problems

Late F-150s carry a lot of electronics, and every module is one more place for a gremlin. A battery flat in the morning from a drain you can't see. An alternator or charging fault that leaves the truck struggling to start. A sensor throwing a code and dropping it into limp mode for no reason you can spot. Sometimes it's simple, a tired battery or a corroded ground. Sometimes it's a module or wiring issue that needs a real diagnosis, not a parts swap.

Suspension

COMMON PROBLEMS: Ball Joint Wear, Control Arm and Bushing Wear, Clunking Noise, Uneven Tire Wear, Rough Ride

An F-150 that hauls and tows leans on its front end hard, and those parts wear from the load and the miles. Ball joints develop play. Control arm bushings soften and knock. You get a clunk over bumps or a knock turning into a driveway, and the steering starts to feel loose. Worn parts pull the alignment off too, so the tires wear unevenly and the ride goes rough. On a work truck, catching this early keeps a small fix from turning into a tire bill on top of it.
