911 problems depend a lot on which generation you’ve got. The 996 and early 997 cars are known for IMS bearing failures, which can take out the whole engine when they let go. RMS leaks, the rear main seal, are common across multiple years and drop oil from the bell housing. Bore scoring on certain M96 and M97 engines shows up as ticking or knocking and is a serious problem when found. Plastic coolant pipes on early Cayenne-platform-related years can leak, though more of a 996 era issue. Ignition coil failures cause misfires and stumbles.

PORSCHE CAYENNE

Cayenne issues are well documented. The plastic coolant pipes inside the V on the V8 models are a known failure point, and when they go, the truck dumps coolant fast. The driveshaft on early Cayennes can develop a flex disc or center bearing failure, showing up as vibration or a clunk on acceleration. Air suspension can sag, leak, or fail outright, leaving the truck sitting low or throwing messages. Coolant lines at the rear of the engine on the V6 can leak and create odor or steam. Coil and plug wear can lead to misfires that get worse over time.

PORSCHE BOXSTER

Boxster problems often echo the 911 of the same era. IMS bearing failure on the 1997 to 2008 cars is the one everyone knows about, and it’s worth knowing where your specific car stands. RMS leaks show up as oil between the engine and transmission. The AOS, air oil separator, fails and causes smoke from the exhaust, rough idle, and oil consumption. Water pumps on the M96 engines have plastic impellers that can break apart and contaminate the cooling system. Coil pack failures cause misfires and check engine lights.

PORSCHE MACAN

Macan issues are newer but already familiar. Carbon buildup on the intake valves of the direct injection engines causes rough idle, hesitation, and reduced power, usually showing up between 50,000 and 80,000 miles. Coolant leaks can come from hoses, the thermostat housing, or the water pump on the V6 models. Transfer case problems can cause shudder or vibration during slow turns. PCM and infotainment glitches can mean frozen screens, slow response, or backup cameras that won’t load. Brake wear is heavier than people expect, especially on the GTS and Turbo models.

Panamera problems show up in daily use. Air suspension can leak, sag overnight, or fail and leave the car sitting unevenly. Carbon buildup on the intake valves affects idle and power on the direct injection engines. Oil leaks at the valve cover and oil pan gaskets are common as miles add up.
