The A3 idles smoothly when everything is right. So you feel it the moment something changes. The engine shakes at a stoplight. The car stumbles when you pull away. Once in a while it just dies at idle and leaves you restarting it in traffic. A bad ignition coil is usually behind all of that.

What a Coil Actually Does
Each cylinder has a coil sitting on top of the spark plug. The coil fires the plug at the right instant, which lights the fuel and keeps the engine running. When a coil weakens or quits, that cylinder stops firing cleanly. That miss is what you feel as a shake or a stumble.
The A3 shares its engine with the Volkswagen GTI, and these coils are a known weak spot on both. Heat cycling cracks them over time. One fails, then another, and the pattern repeats.
What You Notice
The signs show up in normal driving, usually when the engine is under light load or sitting still.
- A rough, shaky idle at a light or in the driveway
- A stumble or hesitation when you press the gas
- The engine stalling at idle, then restarting fine
- A flashing or steady check engine light
- A drop in power and worse fuel economy
A flashing light is the one to respect. That means the misfire is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, and that can cook the catalytic converter fast. When it flashes, stop driving hard and get it looked at.
Why It Gets Worse
A misfire is not a hold-steady problem. A weak coil pushes the others to work harder, and the unburned fuel washes oil off the cylinder walls. Drive on it long enough and a cheap coil job turns into a fouled plug, a soaked converter, or worse. The early fix is small. The late one is not.
Coils and plugs also work as a pair. A tired plug drags down a good coil, and a failing coil fouls a fresh plug. That is why we look at both, not just the one that threw the code.
Why Not Just Swap the Coil
Plenty of A3 owners buy a single coil, drop it in, and the light comes back a month later on a different cylinder. The code told them which one missed, not why. Sometimes it is the coil. Sometimes it is the plug under it, a wiring problem, or a fuel issue faking a misfire.
