The Sequoia is a big, heavy SUV with a V8 that works to move it, and that engine leans on its cooling system harder than a small car ever would. The water pump is the part that keeps coolant moving, and when it starts to leak, catching it early is the difference between a routine job and an overheated engine.
Where the Leak Shows Up
The water pump has a seal that wears with age and heat. As it goes, coolant seeps out, usually from a weep hole on the pump that's built to warn you. You might spot a small puddle near the front of the engine, or crusty pink or orange residue dried around the pump area. On a tall SUV like the Sequoia, the drip can land in spots you don't see unless you're looking, so the residue is often the first real clue.
The Signs Worth Watching

- Pink or orange crust around the pump and hoses
That noise is a useful one. The pump spins on a bearing, and a bearing going bad gets loud before the pump quits.
