Cold weather is hard on a cooling system, which sounds backward until you think about it. The TSX runs coolant that's supposed to handle freezing temps and engine heat both, and the parts that hold it all get brittle as they age. Winter is when a small leak you've been ignoring tends to turn into a real problem. A low system and a cold snap don't mix well.
Signs the TSX Is Leaking
The TSX usually gives you something to notice before it overheats:
- Coolant disappearing from the reservoir with no clear puddle
- A sweet smell after the car's been running
- The temperature gauge climbing higher than normal or swinging around
- White steam from under the hood or the exhaust
- Spots of coolant on the driveway, often green or orange
That temperature gauge is the one to watch most closely. A TSX that creeps toward hot, especially climbing a grade or sitting in traffic, is telling you the cooling system can't keep up, and that's the moment to pull over rather than push on.
Where TSX Coolant Leaks Come From
These leaks tend to trace to a few spots. The radiator can crack, often along the plastic end tanks where they meet the core. Hoses harden with age and weep at the clamps. The water pump wears and leaks from its seal. The thermostat housing is another spot that seeps as it ages. On a TSX with miles on it, more than one of these can be going at once.
Why You Don't Ride It Out
Overheating is what turns a cheap fix into a wrecked engine. Run a TSX hot enough, long enough, and you risk warping the head or blowing a head gasket, and now the repair is many times what the leak would have cost. The engine temperature is the thing to respect. A hose is cheap. A head gasket is not.
How We Find It
We pressure test the cooling system, which forces the leak to show itself while the engine's cold and safe to work on. We use UV dye for the leaks that hide, tracing the glow back to the source. We check the radiator, the hoses, the pump, and the thermostat housing, and we test the coolant's freeze protection while we're at it. You hear exactly what's leaking before anything gets replaced.
Beat the Cold to It
A coolant leak only grows, and winter is the worst time to find out your system can't hold temperature. Bring your TSX to Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley and we'll find the leak before it leaves you stranded or cooks the engine. Reach out to book a cooling system check.
