You tap the brakes coming up to a light and hear a squeal you didn't used to hear. Maybe a little shimmy comes up through the pedal when you slow from freeway speed. The TLX is heavier than it looks and asks a lot of its brakes, so the pads and rotors wear out whether you're watching or not. The car warns you. Most people miss the first few signs.

That First Squeal

Brake pads are built to warn you. Most have a small metal tab that squeals once the pad gets thin, and that sound is on purpose. It's there to nag you into the shop before the pad is gone.

A squeal every time you brake that fades once you're rolling is usually that wear tab. People ignore it because the car still stops fine. But the pad keeps thinning while you wait, and what comes next costs more.

When It Turns to Grinding

Ignore the squeal long enough and it becomes a grind. That's metal on metal. The pad material is gone and the backing plate is dragging on the rotor every stop. Grinding is past due. Now the rotors are getting chewed up, and a pad job turns into pads and rotors both.

The Shimmy Is the Rotors

A different sign comes through the pedal. You brake from higher speed and feel a pulse or a shake, like the pedal is pushing back. That's usually warped rotors.

Rotors warp from heat. Hard stops, long downhills, or just age can leave them uneven, and a warped rotor makes the brakes grab and release as it spins. You feel it most slowing from freeway speed. It doesn't fix itself.

What Wears These Brakes Faster

Not every TLX wears brakes at the same rate. A few things speed it up:

  • Lots of stop and go commuting
  • A heavier right foot and later, harder stops
  • Hills and downhill grades that load the brakes with heat
  • Cheap pads from a past brake job that wear fast
  • Towing or a loaded car

Two owners can drive the same TLX and need brakes at very different times. How and where you drive is most of it.

Why You Don't Put It Off

Brakes are the one system where waiting changes the safety. Catch it at the squeal and you're usually just replacing pads. Let it grind and you're replacing rotors too. Let the rotors warp badly and your stopping distance stretches, which is the part that matters when someone stops short ahead of you.
