COMMON PROBLEMS: Turbo Oil Consumption, Carbon Buildup, VTC Actuator Rattle, Oil Leaks, Spark Plug and Coil Wear

The turbo four in the newer RDX pulls hard, but it can drink oil, so keep an eye on the level between changes. Direct injection means carbon slowly cakes onto the intake valves, and once it does, you get a stumble or a rough patch. The older V6 ones are known for a VTC actuator rattle, that quick grind on a cold start that makes owners wince. Both seep oil from the usual gaskets as they age. Worn plugs and coils throw a misfire and light the dash.

Cooling System

COMMON PROBLEMS: Water Pump Leaks, Coolant Loss, Thermostat Failure, Overheating, Coolant Smell

The RDX cooling system holds up, but heat wears it down eventually. The water pump starts weeping at the gasket. Hoses and the radiator spring leaks at the seams. A stuck thermostat sends the temperature the wrong way, too hot, or never quite warming up. Half the time you smell the coolant before you ever spot a drip. Let a slow leak run and it turns into an overheat, and that's a whole different bill than a hose or a pump.

Fuel System

The turbo RDX runs direct injection, which is great for power and mileage but hard on the high-pressure pump and the injectors. When one starts to fade, you feel it. A long crank before it catches. A shaky idle at the light. A misfire that trips the check engine light and leaves it stumbling. The thing is, it feels a lot like a bad coil or plug. Which is exactly why guessing gets pricey. We test it and sort a fuel problem from an ignition one before you spend.

COMMON PROBLEMS: Battery Drain, Infotainment Glitches, Sensor Faults, Warning Lights, Starting Problems

There's a lot of electronics packed into an RDX, so there's more that can act up. Battery dead in the morning from a drain you can't see. The screen freezing or rebooting on its own, which owners report on these. A sensor that faults and drops the car into limp mode for no reason you can find. Could be simple: a tired battery, a bad ground. Could be a module that needs real digging, not a parts swap. You don't know until you look.

Suspension

COMMON PROBLEMS: Control Arm Bushing Wear, Clunking Noise, Uneven Tire Wear, Steering Vibration, Rough Ride

The RDX rides tight and planted when the front end's fresh, so you notice when that changes. The control arm bushings wear and start making noises: a clunk over a pothole, a knock turning into the driveway. Worn parts pull the alignment off too, so the tires scrub unevenly and the wheel picks up a shimmy at speed. Struts fade slowly and let the body float over dips instead of settling. Give it enough time, and an SUV that felt sharp starts feeling loose and busy on rough roads.
