OIL LEAK REPAIR

YOUR LOCAL OIL LEAK REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS

Serving the East Bay Area Including Fremont, Milpitas, Warm Springs, Sunol & beyond

Oil spots on your garage floor tell you something’s wrong, but they don’t tell you where it’s coming from. Engines have dozens of seals and gaskets, and any of them can fail as miles accumulate. Chasing an oil leak without proper diagnosis wastes money on repairs that don’t solve the problem. We find the actual source and fix it so your driveway stays clean.

VALVE COVER GASKET REPAIR

WHAT IT COVERS: Replacing the gasket that seals the valve cover to the cylinder head, stopping oil from seeping onto exhaust components and creating smoke or burning smells.

Valve cover gaskets sit on top of the engine where heat does the most damage. The rubber hardens over years of thermal cycling until it shrinks and cracks. Oil seeps past and runs down the side of the engine, pooling on the exhaust manifold where it burns and smokes. You smell it before you see it. Some engines make this repair straightforward. Others bury the valve covers under intake manifolds and wiring harnesses that need to come off first. We’ve done enough of these to know which engines fight back and how to deal with them. Spark plug tube seals often get replaced at the same time since they’re part of the same gasket set and fail for the same reasons. Ignoring a valve cover leak leads to oil-soaked ignition coils and misfires that cost more to fix than the gasket itself.

OIL PAN GASKET REPAIR

WHAT IT COVERS: Replacing the gasket between the oil pan and engine block to stop leaks that drip onto your driveway and create low oil conditions.

The oil pan bolts to the bottom of your engine and holds several quarts of oil. The gasket between the pan and block handles constant exposure to hot oil and vibration. Eventually it fails and oil drips steadily onto whatever’s below. Some vehicles let you drop the pan without much drama. Others require lifting the engine or removing subframe components to create clearance. We’ve dealt with both situations plenty of times. A leaking oil pan gasket seems minor until you check your dipstick and find it two quarts low. Running an engine without enough oil destroys bearings and causes damage that totals cars. We replace pan gaskets properly and torque the bolts in sequence so the new gasket seals correctly and stays sealed.

REAR MAIN SEAL REPLACEMENT

WHAT IT COVERS: Replacing the seal between the engine and transmission that prevents oil from escaping at the back of the crankshaft.

The rear main seal is the most labor-intensive oil leak repair on most vehicles. This seal sits where the crankshaft exits the engine block to connect with the transmission. Replacing it means separating the transmission from the engine, which involves significant disassembly. The seal itself costs almost nothing. The labor to reach it costs considerably more. A rear main leak shows up as oil dripping from the bell housing area between engine and transmission. The drip pattern can look similar to a leaking oil pan, so proper diagnosis matters before committing to this repair. We confirm the source before quoting anything. If you’re already doing a clutch replacement or transmission work, adding the rear main seal makes sense since access is already there.

TIMING COVER GASKET REPAIR

WHAT IT COVERS: Replacing gaskets at the front of the engine that seal the timing cover and prevent oil from reaching belts and pulleys.

The timing cover protects your timing chain or belt at the front of the engine. Gaskets and seals around this cover fail and let oil escape onto the accessory drive system. Oil-soaked belts slip, squeal, and deteriorate rapidly. The repair complexity depends entirely on engine design. Some timing covers come off with a few bolts. Others require removing the radiator, AC compressor, and half the front of the car. We assess what’s involved before providing estimates. Replacing timing cover gaskets while the cover is already off for chain or belt service saves labor compared to doing them separately.

OIL FILTER HOUSING REPAIR

WHAT IT COVERS: Replacing gaskets and seals on the oil filter housing assembly, which commonly leak on European vehicles and some domestic engines.

European manufacturers love remote oil filter housings, and these housings love to leak. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and VW models all suffer from housing gasket failures that let oil escape and run down the engine. The housing sits in different locations depending on the platform, but the failure mode stays consistent. The gasket or O-ring hardens with age and heat exposure until oil pushes past. Some housings develop cracks in the plastic that require complete replacement rather than just a gasket. Oil from a filter housing leak often drips onto belts or exhaust components, causing secondary problems that mask the original source. We see these constantly on German cars with fifty thousand miles or more. The repair is usually straightforward once you’ve done a few dozen of them.
