Engine Repair

YOUR LOCAL Engine Repair SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS

Serving the East Bay Area Including Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, Dublin & beyond

Engine problems rarely start with one big failure. They show up as small changes you keep working around. A longer crank in the morning. A rough idle at stoplights. A warning light that comes and goes. Then one day, the car feels weak on the freeway, and you realize it has been getting worse for a while. At Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA, we take engine repair seriously. We test first, confirm the cause, then fix what your engine actually needs so you’re not paying for guesses.

ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK

COMMON PROBLEMS: Code scan, freeze frame review, live data testing, and a focused inspection to confirm the root problem.

We start by pulling codes and reading the data that came with them. Freeze frame shows what the engine was doing when the fault set. We look at fuel trims, misfire counters, sensor readings, and temperature data. Then we inspect the basics that cause many repeat issues, such as air intake leaks, vacuum lines, ignition parts, and fluid levels. If the problem needs a road test, we do it. If it needs a smoke test, we run it. Diagnosis is where most shops either get it right or waste your time.

MISFIRE AND ROUGH IDLE REPAIR

COMMON PROBLEMS: Finding the cause of misfires and vibration, then repairing ignition, fuel, or air issues based on testing.

Misfires can feel like a shake, a stumble, or a loss of power under load. The cause can be simple, worn plugs or a weak coil, or it can be deeper, injector problems, vacuum leaks, or compression loss. We don’t swap parts until we confirm the reason the cylinder is missing. We test spark, fuel, and air delivery. Then we fix the failure point and verify misfires stay at zero on a road test.

OIL LEAK AND COOLANT LEAK ENGINE REPAIR

COMMON PROBLEMS: Locating leaks, repairing sealing surfaces, and protecting the engine from low fluid damage.

Leaks do more than stain a driveway. Oil can hit hot parts and smoke. It can soak belts and damage hoses. Coolant leaks can lead to overheating fast. We trace leaks from the highest wet point, not the lowest drip. If needed, we clean and recheck or use dye to confirm the path. After repair, we recheck for fresh seep and confirm fluid levels stay stable.

OVERHEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM ENGINE WORK

COMMON PROBLEMS: Identifying why the engine runs hot and repairing the parts that control temperature and flow.

Overheating can damage gaskets and warp parts. A cooling system issue can be a leak, a thermostat problem, a weak fan, or a water pump failure. We pressure test, check fan operation, confirm thermostat behavior, and verify proper coolant flow. Then we repair the issue and road test to confirm stable temperature in real driving, not just in the bay.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ENGINE REPAIR

COMMON PROBLEMS: Repairing the underlying engine fault that triggered the light and confirming the fix with live data and readiness checks.

A code name isn’t a repair plan. Two cars can set the same code for different reasons. We confirm what caused the light before we replace anything. We also look at freeze frame data, since it shows the exact conditions that triggered the fault. That helps us avoid chasing the wrong part. After the repair, we clear codes, verify the data returns to normal, and confirm the system completes its checks so the light stays off.

"Been going here for years and it’s always a great experience. They are friendly, honest, trustworthy, and patient. I appreciate that they start small before doing anything major and costly, and they back up their work. I have been lied to by dealerships before, and John will show me the parts and explain what is needed and why. Highly recommend!"

"Would highly recommend this service shop. They were quick to take my car in, performed a very thorough and comprehensive service, and priced the work extremely competitively. If you need a good mechanic, and are looking to be treated fairly, you should go to John & Jennifer."

Evan

Customer

"Such an honest shop. It has saved me thousands of dollars by providing honest assessments of my car and advising against recommendations made by dishonest shops, 2 in Castro Valley and one in Hayward. Furthermore, today the mechanic told me I do not need a new battery and instead recharged mine for 15 minutes at no charge even though I offered to pay for his time."
