AC REPAIR

YOUR LOCAL AC REPAIR SHOP / TECHNICIANS / SPECIALISTS

Serving the East Bay Area Including Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, Dublin & beyond

AC problems usually show up at the worst time. The fan is blowing, the cabin is hot, and you’re stuck in traffic, hoping it “kicks on.” Some systems cool while driving, then warm up at stoplights. Others never get cold at all. At Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA, we don’t guess or just top it off. We test the system, find the reason the cooling stopped, and fix it so the cold air lasts.

AC SYSTEM CHECK

COMMON PROBLEMS: Vent temperature testing, compressor operation check, pressure readings, airflow review, and an initial leak and component inspection.

We start simple and specific. We check vent temps at idle and at steady RPM. We confirm the compressor engages and stays engaged. We check condenser fan operation and airflow across the condenser, since weak airflow can make any system feel warm. We read high and low side pressures and compare them to what the system should be doing. We also look for oily residue at fittings and hose crimps, since refrigerant leaks often leave oil behind. If the numbers don’t make sense, we don’t keep guessing. We move to leak testing.

REFRIGERANT LEAK DIAGNOSIS

COMMON PROBLEMS: Finding the leak source using inspection, pressure testing, dye, or electronic detection, and confirming the exact failure point.

Most AC systems don’t “use up” refrigerant. If it’s low, it leaked out. The hard part is that leaks can be slow and hard to see. A condenser can seep and only show a faint oily spot. A service port can leak and leave almost nothing behind. An evaporator leak can hide inside the dash and show up as weak cooling that keeps returning. We use the right detection method for the situation, then confirm the leak location before we recommend parts.

AC RECHARGE

COMMON PROBLEMS: Recovering refrigerant, evacuating air and moisture, and recharging by factory spec after the system is confirmed sealed.

Recharge should not be a guessing game. We recover what’s in the system, pull a vacuum to remove air and moisture, then recharge by weight to the factory spec. Too little charge stays warm. Too much charge can raise pressures and reduce cooling. After recharge, we recheck vent temps and system pressures and confirm stable cooling at idle and during a road test.

COMPRESSOR AND COMPONENT REPAIR

COMMON PROBLEMS: Repairing or replacing failed AC components such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, driers, and related electrical controls.

When the compressor fails, the AC can blow warm even with a correct charge. Some failures are loud. Some are quiet. Some compressors run but don’t build the pressure difference needed for cooling. We confirm what failed with pressure readings, clutch or control checks, and system performance testing. If a compressor has internal damage, we also look for contamination risk. Metal debris can travel through the system and cause repeat failures if the cleanup is skipped. We explain what needs replacement and why.

AIRFLOW AND HVAC CONTROL FIXES

COMMON PROBLEMS: Checking cabin air filter condition, blower performance, blend door operation, and heater-side mixing issues.

Sometimes the refrigerant side is fine, and the cabin still feels warm. A clogged cabin filter can cut airflow so much that cooling feels weak. A blend door can stick and mix heat into the air even when the AC is on. A weak blower can also make the system feel like it isn’t working. We check these basics during diagnosis so you don’t pay for refrigerant work when the real issue is airflow or temperature control.

"Been going here for years and it’s always a great experience. They are friendly, honest, trustworthy, and patient. I appreciate that they start small before doing anything major and costly, and they back up their work. I have been lied to by dealerships before, and John will show me the parts and explain what is needed and why. Highly recommend!"

"Would highly recommend this service shop. They were quick to take my car in, performed a very thorough and comprehensive service, and priced the work extremely competitively. If you need a good mechanic, and are looking to be treated fairly, you should go to John & Jennifer."

Evan

Customer

"Such an honest shop. It has saved me thousands of dollars by providing honest assessments of my car and advising against recommendations made by dishonest shops, 2 in Castro Valley and one in Hayward. Furthermore, today the mechanic told me I do not need a new battery and instead recharged mine for 15 minutes at no charge even though I offered to pay for his time."
